The Art of Tending: Cotton – The Breath of the Earth
Cotton is the breath of the earth woven into thread. It is the simplicity of the field, the honesty of the sun, the coolness it offers the skin. A «Letter» made of cotton is a companion in everyday life, a canvas upon which the story of movement and life is written.
Tending to it is not merely cleaning; it is preserving its natural integrity, respecting its humble origins, the promise that it will continue to breathe with you.
Cleansing: The Return to Water
- Preparation: Before its journey into water, prepare your «Letter». Gently fasten its buttons, as if closing a door to a quiet space. Remove any collar stays. Turn the garment inside out – an act of protection that safeguards the soul of its color and the integrity of its fibres from the friction of the world.
- The Temperature of Care: Most of our cotton «Letters» prefer the caress of water at 30°C. More robust fabrics, like Poplin or Oxford cloth, can accept a warmer embrace at 40°C. For fabrics with character, such as Piqué, Denim, or Chinos, allow them to travel alone on their first encounter with water, separate from other colours, to release any excess soul without affecting their companions.
- Separation of Hues: Just as our thoughts need clarity, so do colours need their space. Always separate darks from lights, allowing each hue to maintain its true voice.
Drying: The Embrace of Air
- Release: Once the water cycle is complete, do not let your cotton garment wait. Release it immediately.
- The Breath of Air: Cotton loves the air. Lay it gently on a hanger and allow it to dry naturally, away from direct heat or strong sunlight, which can tire its fibres. For Piqué knits, prefer to lay them flat, as if resting after their journey.
- The Prohibition of Haste: Avoid the harsh heat of the tumble dryer. Haste can shrink the fabric’s soul. The patience of the air is its best ally.
Ironing: The Ritual of Smoothing
- Encountering Heat: Cotton is durable and accepts heat. To restore its calm surface, iron it while still slightly damp – like the earth after a gentle rain. Steam is your ally; it softens the fibres and smooths the lines left by life. Always avoid direct contact between the iron and the buttons; they are details that require respect.
- The Choreography of Care (for shirts): Tending to a shirt can become a small, conscious choreography.
- The Collar: Start with the underside, ironing from one point to the other. Gently repeat on the top side. It is the frame for your face.
- The Cuffs: Unbutton them and iron both sides, like opening a small book, being mindful of the buttons.
- The Front: Carefully iron around the buttons, moving from the shoulder down, following the natural flow of the fabric.
- The Back: Use the edge of the ironing board as a base for one shoulder and lay the fabric flat. Iron from top to bottom. Repeat for the other half.
- The Sleeves: The sleeve seam is your guide. Lay the sleeve flat and iron from the shoulder towards the cuff. Repeat on the other side.
A Companion That Breathes
By tending to your cotton «Letter», you allow it to continue breathing, softening, becoming more familiar with every touch. It is the simple, daily proof that beauty lies in honesty and value in endurance.
