The Art of Tending: Leather – The Signature of Time
Leather is a living matter. It is not merely the surface of an object; it is the skin of time, a canvas upon which the story of touch, light, and the life you share with it is written. Our high-quality, full-grain, naturally tanned leather does not seek the flawless perfection of the machine. It embraces authenticity, its small natural imperfections, the “Imprints” that make it unique.
A «Letter» made of leather does not wear out; it matures. Tending to it is not an effort to stop time, but a dialogue of respect with its very nature, a ritual that allows it to develop its unique character.
The Dialogue with the Elements: Protection
- The Relationship with Light and Water: Leather, like our own skin, interacts with the world. Prolonged exposure to strong sunlight or moisture will write its story upon it, creating a unique patina – a deep, personal colour that narrates your journeys. Embrace this natural evolution. However, just as every dialogue needs measure, avoid excessive exposure.
- The Embrace of the Moment (If Wet): If your leather «Letter» unexpectedly meets water, do not panic. With a soft, absorbent, lint-free cloth, gently dab the moisture away. Do not rub. Allow the leather to dry naturally, at its own pace, away from harsh heat sources like radiators or hair dryers. Patience is the best remedy.
The Ritual of Care: Tending
- The Beauty of Patina: The natural patina that the leather will develop over time is not a stain or flaw. It is its soul, the proof of the life it has shared with you. Appreciate it. You do not need special products to maintain its beautiful appearance. Authenticity is its luxury.
- Gentle Cleansing: Occasionally, if you feel the need, you can wipe its surface with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Your movement should be gentle, a caress, not a scrub. Let it air dry naturally. Gentleness is the rule.
- Respecting its Nature: Keep leather away from intense heat sources that can dehydrate it. Naturally tanned leather (vegetable-tanned) may darken slightly with exposure to light – this is part of its natural maturation, not a defect.
Rest: Storage
- The Breath of Matter: Leather needs to breathe. When you are not using your leather «Letter», store it in its cotton dust bag or wrapped in a soft, natural cloth. This protects it from dust and scratches while allowing it to breathe.
- Maintaining Form: For bags or items with volume, gently stuff them with white tissue paper (not newspaper, which can transfer ink) to maintain their shape during their rest.
A Map Written Together
By tending to your leather item, you are not just maintaining a material. You are participating in the writing of its story. Every mark, every change in colour, is a word, a sentence in it’s “Second Chapter”. It is a map of the time you have spent together, a “Lived Experience” made visible and tangible.
