Handmade Christmas gifts usually begin with a list and end with a hurried purchase. At GRAMMA House, we suggest beginning somewhere else: with the person who will open the box, and with the hand that made what lies inside.
Everything that follows starts its journey in Pagondas, on the island of Samos. Most of it is made by hand, in small quantities. Clay, hand-blown glass, olive wood, linen. Materials that carry weight in the palm and change with use.
There are not many. There are enough to find a gift that stays.
How to choose a gift that stays
Three questions are enough.
The first: will it be used? A cup held every morning says more than an ornament forgotten on a shelf.
The second: what is it made of? Natural materials age well. Clay holds the warmth of coffee. Wood darkens under the hand. Linen softens with every wash.
The third: does it have a story? An object with a name and a place gives its new owner something to tell.
This is how we understand handmade Christmas gifts. Not unusual. Made once, by one hand. We have written about this thought at greater length in Handmade gifts with meaning.
Where they come from
Everything you will see is produced in Greece, in small family businesses and workshops, without child labor. The garments are sewn by hand, not by machine. The olive wood comes from pruning, not from felled trees.
This means small quantities. An object may sell out and need time to be made again. It also means that no two pieces are ever quite the same. A bubble in the glass, a faint line in the clay, the grain of the wood. We call it the Imprint, and it is the reason such a gift resembles no other under the tree.
For her
If you are looking for handmade Christmas gifts for a woman who does not want one more object, but something she will wear, begin here.
The Isichastirio Kimono is sewn by hand, from linen and rayon. A single-color body, a contrasting band along the opening, matching cuffs on the sleeves. It is worn at home and beyond it.
The Isichastirio Dress: The Flow of Serenity has an A-line cut and the same fabric. It falls lightly and lets the body move.
From the Arpedoni Chapter, two pieces of jewelry built on geometry. The “Kanon” Bracelet is a cuff woven bead by bead, with Japanese Miyuki beads. The “Knots of Arpedoni” Necklace holds twelve Tiger’s Eye stones, at equal distances, on a fine chain.
For him, and for anyone who writes
The Olive Fountain Pen has a grip of olive wood that comes from pruning. It fills from a bottle, with whatever ink its owner chooses. It comes in three versions: Silver & Olive, Gold & Olive, Black & Olive.
For the everyday note, the Olive Pen has the same grip, in Gold and in Silver.
The Olive Wood Letter Opener completes the desk. A wooden handle, a metal blade, for the letter that is opened with care.
The book The Maze: A Manual of Introspection began one afternoon in the narrow lanes of Pagondas. Beside it stands the Olive Wood Maze, a small object for the desk that invites a pause.
Each of the handmade writing instruments bears the GR logo of the House.
For the home
The scented candles of Isichastirio carry notes of frankincense and amber, old leather and fresh cotton, seawater and lotus. The large one, The Library of Silence, has a double wick and suits the living room. The small one, The Vow of Calm, is for the desk or beside a book. Both come in amber glass.
For anyone who does not light candles, the Diffuser: The Breath of the Archive scents a room quietly, for months.
The ceramic candle holder “Phos” and the Ceramic Incense Stick Holder are made of clay, by hand. Small objects that define a corner.
For the table
The Ritual of Food is made of clay and hand-blown glass. Small differences from piece to piece are the imprint of the artisan.
The mug “Aphi” is for the morning coffee. The plate “Gaia” for the main meal. The bowl “Stagona” for whatever goes in the middle of the table. The glass “Anasa” has no handle, so the palm can feel the temperature.
From the Water Chapter, Glass: The Breath of Water is hand-blown. Clear, with a textured surface and small air bubbles inside it. Two or four together make a complete gift.
Small gifts
A gift does not need size. The egg cup “Avgi”, the bowl “Kypseli”, and the small Maze fit in one palm.
They suit a colleague, a teacher, a host. They also suit a gift exchange, where the limit is small and the thought counts for more.
Two objects, one gift
Some objects say more when they travel together.
- The Olive Fountain Pen with the Olive Wood Letter Opener, for the desk of someone who still writes and receives letters.
- The book The Maze with the mug “Aphi”, for a slow morning of reading.
- The candle The Vow of Calm with the candle holder “Phos”, for a corner of the home.
- The plate “Gaia” with the bowl “Stagona”, as the beginning of a table that will be completed over time.
It does not need to be a set. It needs two things that will be used at the same hour of the day.
The gift that is not wrapped
Some people do not want one more object. For them, there is time.
Three Workshops take place at the atelier of the House in Pagondas. The Art of Earth & Wheel for ceramics. The Thread of Creation for pattern-making and sewing. The Anatomy of a Garment, where each participant sews a skirt of their own.
If the dates do not suit, we arrange a private Workshop on a day that does. It is a gift for someone who already has Samos in their plans, or needs a reason to add it.
The GRAMMA Gift Card, when you are not sure what to choose
If you do not know the taste or the size, The GRAMMA Gift Card leaves the choice to the recipient. It is available in different amounts.
They choose the Chapter that speaks to them, in their own time. It is the simplest answer for anyone who wishes to offer something from the House without taking a risk.
The packaging
At GRAMMA there is no “plain” packaging and no “gift” packaging. Every order leaves in the recyclable box of the House, wrapped in craft paper. It is always ready to be offered.
You will find the thinking behind the wrap in GRAMMA packaging: The Ethos of Matter.
When to order
There is no deadline. Order whenever you wish.
Every parcel is prepared at the atelier and sets out from an island, where the weather and the sea sometimes set the pace. If your gift has a date, allow it a few extra days.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are good handmade Christmas gifts for women?
Something to wear or something to light. The Isichastirio Kimono and the Isichastirio Dress for a woman who loves linen. The “Kanon” Bracelet or the “Knots of Arpedoni” Necklace for one who prefers a small piece of jewelry with a story. An Isichastirio candle for her room.
What gift should I choose for someone I do not know well?
Something used every day, with no size. The mug “Aphi”, the glass The Breath of Water, or the small candle The Vow of Calm. If you are not certain, The GRAMMA Gift Card leaves the choice to them.
Are there handmade Christmas gifts for men?
The Olive Fountain Pen and the Olive Wood Letter Opener, for anyone who writes or reads. The book The Maze with the Olive Wood Maze beside it. A Workshop in Pagondas, for anyone who would rather make something with their own hands.
Can I send the gift with a personal message?
Yes. Write your message at checkout and we transfer it onto a card inside the parcel. Every order already leaves in the box of the House, ready to be offered.
When should I order for delivery before Christmas?
We do not set a last day. The earlier, the calmer. Parcels leave from Samos, and in winter the weather may add a day or two. If the gift needs to be somewhere on a specific day, write it in the order notes.
What happens if the gift is not right?
You have the right to return it within 14 days of receipt, provided the object is in its original condition and in its box. GRAMMA Gift Cards are excluded, as is anything that has been unsealed or used, such as candles. The details are on the Returns page.
Do you offer corporate gifts?
Yes. We design proposals for your partners together with you, so that the gift arrives as a gesture and not as promotional material. Write to us and we will talk it through.
A gift is a letter without words
Choose it as you would write. With little, with care, for one person.
All the Chapters of the House are waiting. Make yours the gift that stays.
