Scented Candles: How to Choose, Burn, and Care for Them

Scented candles are among the few objects that change a room without taking up space. A flame, a scent, and the room acquires an hour: afternoon, evening, Sunday.

But they are not all the same. They differ in material, in wick, in scent, in size. And a good candle can be lost in a few days if it is lit the wrong way the first time.

This guide explains what to look for before you choose, how to burn a candle, and how to make it last. The examples come from the candles of Isichastirio, the first Chapter of GRAMMA House.

What a scented candle is made of

Three things: the wax, the wick, the scent.

The wax. Most candles on the market are made of paraffin, a petroleum derivative. Soy candles are made from the oil of the soybean. They are plant-based, melt at a lower temperature, and for that reason usually burn more slowly. Beeswax is the oldest material of all, with a sweet scent of its own.

The candles of Isichastirio are made of natural soy wax.

The wick. It decides how calmly the flame burns. A cotton wick is the simple, proven choice, and it is the one we use. A wide candle needs two wicks, so that it melts evenly to the edge.

The scent. Here lies the difference between a candle that “smells nice” and one that has character. A considered scent is not one smell. It is three, appearing in order.

How to read a scent

Perfumers speak of a pyramid.

The top is what you smell first, the moment you lift the lid. It is light and leaves quickly. The heart appears once the candle has warmed, and it is what fills the room. The base is what stays in the air and in the fabrics, hours after the flame is out.

In the candles of Isichastirio, the pyramid reads like this:

  • Top: seawater and lotus.
  • Heart: old leather and fresh cotton.
  • Base: frankincense and amber.

It is the scent of an old library on an island. We have written about how this atmosphere came to be in The Serenity Palette.

When you choose, ask about the base first. It is the part you will live with longest.

Which size for which room

Size is not a matter of price. It is a matter of space.

A small candle in a large living room will not be heard. A large one in a small room will tire you.

For the living room and open spaces, The Library of Silence is the large candle of Isichastirio. It weighs 500 grams, has a double wick for an even burn, and burns for more than 60 hours. Its vessel is amber glass with a wooden lid.

For the desk, the nightstand, or the reading corner, The Vow of Calm is the small one. It weighs 300 grams and carries the same scent, at an intensity that suits a personal space.

The amber glass has its reason too. As the flame sinks into the vessel, the light comes out warm, as if from an old lamp.

How to burn a candle properly

The first burn decides the whole life of the candle.

Let it melt to the edge. The first time, keep it lit until the entire surface has melted, from wall to wall. Wax “remembers.” If you put it out early, next time it will melt only in the middle and dig a well around the wick.

Two to three hours at a time. That is enough for the scent to spread and for the surface to melt evenly. More than four hours in a row is not needed, and it overheats the vessel.

Trim the wick. Before each lighting, shorten it to about a quarter of an inch, with scissors. A long wick makes a large flame, smoke, and a black mark on the glass.

Away from drafts. An open window or a fan tilts the flame, and the candle melts on one side.

Put it out gently. With a snuffer, not by blowing. This way no wax is splashed and no smell of smoke remains.

Stop before the end. When about half an inch of wax is left at the bottom, the candle is finished. Do not light it again, because the glass becomes very hot.

And the obvious, which is worth saying. A burning candle is never left alone. It sits on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from curtains, books, children, and animals.

Where and when to light a candle

The same candle smells different depending on where it is placed.

On a low table, at the height where you sit, the scent reaches you sooner than from a high shelf. In a closed room, half an hour before you enter is enough. In an open space it takes more patience.

Three moments suit it especially:

  • The reading hour, with the candle beside the book and not behind it.
  • The afternoon you return home, as a sign that work is done.
  • The hour you are expecting friends, lighting it half an hour before the doorbell rings.

One moment does not suit it: the meal. At the dinner table, a scented candle competes with the plate. There, choose a plain unscented candle, and keep the scented one for the living room.

Candle or diffuser

They do not do the same work.

A candle is for one hour of the day. You light it, you sit, you put it out. It has a beginning and an end, and that is why it resembles a ritual.

A diffuser is for the space you want to smell the same always, without thinking about it. The entrance, the bathroom, the office where you do not want a flame.

The Diffuser: The Breath of the Archive holds 200 ml and scents continuously for three to four months. One piece of advice is enough: turn the reeds once a week, and the scent is renewed.

For anyone who wants both, the set The Ritual of Isichastirio holds the large candle, the small candle, and the diffuser, with the same scent throughout the home.

Around the candle

A candle in a vessel stands on its own. A table candle needs a base.

The ceramic candle holder “Phos” is shaped by hand, from clay, in matte white. Its base also works as a tray for dripping wax, so the surface beneath stays clean.

For those who prefer smoke to flame, the Ceramic Incense Stick Holder collects the ash and protects the furniture from heat.

The candle as a gift

In December, the candle is among the gifts most often given. The reason is simple: it has no size, it suits every home, and it is used.

If you are choosing for someone else, prefer the small size when you do not know their space, and the large when you know it will sit in the living room. Together with the candle holder “Phos,” it becomes a gift for an entire corner.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do scented candles last?

It depends on the weight, the material, and how you burn them. The large candle of Isichastirio, The Library of Silence, burns for more than 60 hours. At two hours an evening, that means about a month. A trimmed wick and protection from drafts make it last longer.

Why does my candle melt only in the middle?

Because the first time it was put out before the whole surface had melted. It can be corrected. Wrap aluminum foil around the rim of the vessel, leaving an opening in the center, and light it for one to two hours. The heat will melt the walls and the surface will level.

What is the difference between soy candles and paraffin candles?

Soy is a plant material, while paraffin comes from petroleum. Soy wax melts at a lower temperature and usually burns more slowly. It has a softer, creamier look and may show small irregularities on the surface. This is a trait of the material, not a flaw.

Candle or reed diffuser?

A candle for the hours you sit. A diffuser for the spaces you want scented always, without a flame. The Diffuser: The Breath of the Archive lasts three to four months.

What do I do with the glass vessel when the candle is finished?

You keep it. Pour in hot water, not boiling, and let it cool. The remaining wax will rise to the surface and come out whole. Wash the vessel with soap. The amber glass becomes a pencil holder, a vase for a single branch, or a holder for the matches of the next candle.

Can I return a candle?

Yes, within 14 days, provided it has not been unsealed or lit. The details are on the Returns page.

One flame, one hour

A candle does not change the day. It gives it a place to pause.

Choose it for its material and for the base of its scent. Burn it properly the first time. The rest it does on its own.
